Barnett
Berkeley Lab senior particle physicist Michael Barnett, who has been active in the promotion of science in schools through the Contemporary Physics Education Project (CPEP), will be a panelist today in Boulder, CO, at the second of three public hearings being held by the National Science Board. The meetings are set up to define the character and charter of a proposed NSB Commission on 21st Century Education in Science, Mathematics and Technology. The commission's focus is the improvement of science, technology, engineering and math performance in K-16 education. Go here for more information.

Sonora High School
Students Visit Lab

Nine students from Sonora High School, all members of the Science Club there, and two of their instructors stopped by the Lab earlier this week to check out the facilities and learn about current research. The group first visited the Advanced Light Source, where beamline scientist Mike Martin gave them a tour, then the Center for Environmental Biotechnology (Earth Sciences) in Building 70, to hear a talk by Tamas Torok.

Electrical Failure Alerts
Staff to Inspections

spacer image
When a Berkeley Lab employee recently connected high-voltage power cords, a serious electrical failure occurred, which burned and melted the plastic plug ends and could have posed a serious safety hazard. When a circuit breaker for the computer room was tripped, an investigation found that the cause was a faulty cord cap assembly associated with a power distribution unit. A further inspection of similar plugs stored for future use revealed that one of them had the four wires so loosely attached that they could be pulled free from the clamps. This could lead to a similar meltdown. Lesson learned: always inspect cords and plugs before using them, even if the equipment is new.
