Bertozzi is New Director
Of Molecular Foundry

Bertozzi
When the new Molecular Foundry building opens its doors this spring, the program will have a new Director — Berkeley Lab materials scientist and UC Berkeley chemistry professor Carolyn Bertozzi. Lab Director Steve Chu made the appointment last week, citing Bertozzi's "energy, creativity, and imagination (that fit) superbly into the Lab's tradition of setting the highest standards for science, innovation and teamwork." A member of the National Academy of Sciences and MacArthur Award winner, Bertozzi is internationally recognized for her work in numerous fields, from glycobiology to biomolecular materials. Read Chu's announcement here.

DOE's Energy Hog
Not Just for Kids

spacer image
Originally aimed at children, the Energy Hog campaign is now also reaching out to adults who want to save energy and money. The new adult section focuses on practical energy-efficiency home improvements, including tips on reducing home energy bills and links to information on new federal income tax credits for specific home improvements and purchases of hybrid vehicles. The site also links to a home energy audit tool developed by Berkeley Lab. Go here to view the site.

Photovoltaic cells
California Solar PV
Cost Trends Detailed

Solar photovoltaic costs in California have declined significantly in recent years, according to a new report released by Berkeley Lab. The report's authors — including Ryan Wiser and Mark Bolinger with Environmental Energy Technologies Division — say the study presents the most comprehensive analysis performed to date of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) cost trends in California, which is by far the largest PV market in the U.S., and is the third largest in the world (behind Japan and Germany). Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENT

National Heart Month
Throughout February

spacer image
The Health Care Facilitator Office wants to remind everyone that February is "National Heart Month." The average heart pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood a day through 60,000 miles of blood vessels.   At 70 years of age, the heart will have tallied more than 2.5 billion beats. To maintain a healthy heart, stay physically active, lose excess weight, eat less saturated and hydrogenated fats, keep blood pressure under control, and quit smoking. Those wishing to learn more can attend a brown bag lecture on heart disease at noon today in Perseverance Hall.
