It is our pleasure to announce the appointment of Carolyn Bertozzi as the Director of the Molecular Foundry. Carolyn is a fountain of energy, creativity, and imagination and fits superbly into the Lab's tradition of setting the highest standards for science, innovation, and teamwork.

Professor Bertozzi is the T.Z. and Irmgard Chu Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology on the Berkeley Campus, Faculty Scientist in the Materials Sciences and Physical Biosciences Divisions at the Lab, and Director of the Biological Nanostructures Facility of the Molecular Foundry.

Professor Bertozzi received her undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from Harvard University and worked briefly at AT&T's Bell Laboratories in chemical physics before coming to Berkeley for her Ph.D. in Chemistry. She did postdoctoral work at the University of California, San Francisco before joining the Berkeley faculty in 1996. In the past decade at UC Berkeley and LBNL, she has established an international reputation as a leader in a variety of fields from glycobiology to biomolecular materials. Projects in her lab include efforts to develop biomimetic materials such as bone substitutes; to investigate the roles of polysaccharide-based molecules in cancer, inflammation, and bacterial infection; and to interface synthetic nanomaterials with biological systems for applications such as biosensing and molecular imaging.

Professor Bertozzi's teaching and research has been recognized widely, garnering her the UC Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award; the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry; the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship; the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award of the American Chemical Society. She was appointed the T.Z. and Irmgard Chu Distinguished Professor of Chemistry; Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute; and was recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

We are indeed fortunate to have her lead the Molecular Foundry, as this new venture as it opens its doors this year. Please join us in welcoming Carolyn to her new role at the Lab.
