Mina Bissell, Distinguished Scientist in Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division, has been awarded the Ted Couch Lectureship in Cancer Research for 2007. The H. Lee Moffit Cancer Center initiated this award to honor those who've made significant contributions to cancer research. The award consists of two lectures, a plaque of recognition, and $10,000. The Moffit Center, located at the University of South Florida, is one of the largest stand-alone cancer hospitals in the country and is a National Cancer Institute Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Paper on Breast Cancer Survival Highlighted
A recent paper from Mina Bissell's lab was selected as a highlight in the July 15 edition of Cancer Research. The paper describes a novel approach to predicting the survival of human breast cancer patients by analyzing the gene expression patterns of their tumors. The research, by Berkeley Lab life scientists Marcia Fournier, Paraic Kenny, Bissell and Paul Yaswen, reveals how tumors with gene expression profiles most similar to the profiles of nonmalignant human breast cells grown in 3-D cultures have a significantly better survival outcome. This study further underscores the importance of the 3-D culture techniques developed by Bissell. |
