A young visitor tries on a firefighter helmet at Founders Day

Staff, Retirees Enjoy Founders Day Event

More than 1,000 employees, retirees and their families and friends showed up at the Lab on Saturday for the 75th anniversary Founders Day celebration. Attendees enjoyed music, tours, kid's activities, and tasty barbecue while catching up with co-workers and friends. Said one staffer: "I took family members to the event and they were very impressed with the science that goes on here. It was a lovely, exciting, educational day." A photo spread and story on Founders Day will appear in the Sept. 15 issue of The View. Those who want to share comments about the event can send them here. Founders Day organizers would like to thank all those who volunteered their time to make the event a success.

Feinstein Unveils Plan
For Greenhouse Gas Cuts

Farrell
Sen. Dianne Feinstein offered a new Democratic outline last Thursday of a plan to attack global warming in the next session of Congress. A UC Berkeley study suggests that clean energy and other global warming policies actually boost economic activity. Controversial caps on industrial emissions would be more effective, and perhaps more politically palatable, if incorporated into a carefully designed "cap and trade" system, said Cal professor Alex Farrell, also a guest with Berkeley Lab's Earth Sciences Division. Full story.

EETD's Mills Helps
Launch Lighting Project

Plan would help replace expensive kerosene lighting
The World Bank's International Finance Corporation has launched a project to develop alternatives to kerosene lighting used in Sub-Saharan Africa. Evan Mills, with Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, helped develop the project and will be involved in its implementation. According to Mills, 1.6 billion people live without access to electricity, which requires reliance on expensive fuel-based lighting and hinders development. Go here for more information on the program.
