Hydrogen Peroxide
Sensor Could Aid Security

A new family of molecules used to detect hydrogen peroxide and other reactive chemicals in living cells could be a useful addition to anti-terrorist arsenals, says the Berkeley Lab chemist who developed these substances last year. When mixed with a material that contains even trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide, the powdery sensors turn bright yellow or red and light up. "You don't need anything to read the selective reaction other than your eye," said the chemist, Christopher Chang, a faculty scientist in the Lab's Chemical Sciences Division and an assistant professor at UC Berkeley's Department of Chemistry. "You could also use a hand-held black-light lamp to detect the fluorescence." Full story.

University Launches Historical Images Site

The public now has access to over 150,000 images of historical primary source materials including photographs, newspapers, and diaries through the Web site Calisphere, a public service project of the California Digital Library. Calisphere compiles the digital collections of libraries, museums, and cultural heritage organizations across California, and organizes them by theme, such as by era, with special attention to usability for K-12 educators. The site also links to more than 300 UC-created Web sites on a variety of subjects. Full story.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

Metal Stores Closing Thursday Permanently

The Metal Storeroom will close permanently at 3:30 p.m., Thursday. Engineering and Facility users of the Metal Store Room have been trained in using the new blanket order process with the vendor (Metal Supermarkets) selected to provide metals to the Lab. A second vendor was also selected and when the blanket order with that vendor is released, training will be provided on the procurement process being used for that vendor. The Facilities Division cited the Procurement Office and in particular Barbara Larson for finalizing the vendor selection, negotiating the blanket orders, preparing the training materials, scheduling the training and providing the processes to be used.

Apple Laptop Batteries Targeted for Recall

Apple is recalling batteries that can cause overheating in the 12-inch iBook G4, and its 12- and 15-inch PowerBook G4s sold after October 2003. To find out if your battery is defective, go here or call the IT Help Desk (x4357). If your battery is recalled, you may continue to use your Apple laptop safely by turning the system off, ejecting the battery, and using the AC adapter and power cord until the replacement battery arrives.
