Falcone is Named
New ALS Director

Roger Falcone
Falcone
Roger Falcone, a physicist whose specialty is the use of ultrafast pulses of x-ray and laser light to study phenomena in condensed matter, has been named the new director of the Advanced Light Source. He succeeds interim director Janos Kirz, who called him “superbly qualified for the job.” An ALS staff scientist and veteran user of the facility, as well as a UC Berkeley physics professor, Falcone has also been a strong advocate for science education, having served on the Lafayette school board, and worked extensively with the Lawrence Hall of Science’s K-12 programs. His appointment is effective Sept. 1. Full story.

Senator Feinstein
Visits the Lab

California Senator Dianne Feinstein made a fact-finding stop at Berkeley Lab Friday morning. During her visit, she met with Director Steve Chu and Physical Biosciences Division Director Jay Keasling to discuss the Helios project, as well as Saul Perlmutter and Michael Levy, who provided her with information on the Supernova Acceleration Probe. Her visit started with a tour of the 75th Anniversary historical exhibit in the Building 50 lobby.

Don’t Forget Predictions
For Lab in Year 2031

img
Employees now have two ways to submit their predictions about what life will be like when Berkeley Lab turns 100 in 2031: send your predictions here, or drop them in the box provided in the lobby of the Cafeteria. The future visions will be included in a time capsule that will be sealed at the Founders Day picnic on Saturday, Aug. 26, to be opened at the Centennial ceremony in 25 years.

POLICY NOTES

Reminder: Moving
Traffic Violations

img
All individuals operating motor vehicles or bicycles on Laboratory property must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Berkeley Lab traffic and parking regulations. Permission to operate a vehicle or bicycle on Laboratory property is subject to the control of the Laboratory Security Manager and may be revoked at any time. Because of the steep terrain, all skateboards, scooters, and in-line skates are prohibited. Unless otherwise posted, the maximum speed limit on all Laboratory property is 25 miles per hour (for all but emergency vehicles) or slower as conditions require. Parking permits must be visible when individuals enter Berkeley Lab gates. Operators of Laboratory-furnished vehicles are personally responsible for the payment of fines levied by public law enforcement agencies and will receive parking violation points levied for violation of Laboratory parking regulations. The complete text of the Laboratory's policy on moving traffic violations and use of official vehicles may be found in RPM §§1.04 and 1.05. For Laboratory parking policy, see the Parking Enforcement System website.

Proposed Revision
To RIF Policy

The Laboratory is proposing to revise its policy on Reduction in Force (RPM §2.21(B)). The proposed changes will bring the policy into conformity with University policy and to provide a trial employment period to employees targeted for layoff but not yet terminated. This policy applies to nonrepresented employees only. Represented employees should contact their union representative or consult their collective bargaining agreement. Go here to see the proposed changes. The Laboratory's existing Reduction in Force policy can be found here. To comment on this proposed change, contact Human Resources Policies (Mail Stop 90R2121) by Wednesday, Sept. 13.
