‘Cinema 50’ Revives
‘30s at Founders Day
Like an afternoon at the local movie house back in the 1930s when Berkeley Lab was born, the Building 50 Auditorium will be transformed on Founders Day (Aug. 26) into a blast from the past – several, in fact, beginning and ending with “Flash Gordon” serials from 1936. Attendees can see the original King Kong with Fay Wray (1933) at 10:30, and Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein (1931) at 12:20. At 1:30, Dr. Ivan Schuller will present his entertaining and informative film, “When Things Get Small.” Go here for Founders Day program information.

Conflict-of-Interest Rules
Consolidated, Updated
Conflict-of-Interest (COI) policies in the Lab’s Regulations and Procedures Manual (RPM) have appeared in various sections, and many existing policies are out of date, making the search for and understanding of current policies difficult. The Sponsored Projects Office led a Lab committee that created a new “Chapter 10 Conflict of Interest” section that pulls all of this together, for both personnel and research applications. Links to relevant source documents from UC, state and federal agencies are included. The form and the process for disclosing financial interests when using human subjects have been simplified, especially for researchers who are using NIH funds. The Lab is recruiting for a new COI coordinator to replace Karl Olsen, who left the Lab in June.

Discard Sharp Objects Properly to Avoid Injury
Recently, a Berkeley Lab custodian nearly punctured his finger on a pin-mounted partition hook partially stuck into an old headset (see photo) that was in a trash can. This sharp should have been placed in a sharps container, which is a rigid container designed to protect personnel from sharp items. A sharp is any device having corners, edges, or projections capable of cutting or piercing the skin, such as needles and razor blades. Sharps containers are available from Stores. More details on the proper disposal of sharps and broken glass can be found here and on the Waste Management website here.
