A new research center being launched this summer at UC Berkeley will seek to make it as quick and easy to engineer biology as it now is to assemble microprocessors, hard drives and memory chips into a computer. The center -- SynBERC -- will focus on synthetic biology, which researchers say will transform the biotechnology, high-tech, pharmaceutical and chemical industries by providing less expensive drugs and fuels, novel materials, biological sensors and replacement organs from stem cells. "The focus of SynBERC is to make biology easier to engineer," said SynBERC director and Berkeley Lab Physical Biosciences Division Director Jay Keasling. Full story.
Energy Vampires
Drain in 'Off' Mode
By
TJ Greaney
Most people believe that once an electronic item is switched off, it's off. But a blinking red light or a digital clock means circuits within are still using power. This makes the items easier to use, but experts say it is also wasteful. Alan Meier, with Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, says society is moving into an electronic world that's never off. Full story.

Dance Club to Start
West Coast Swing Class
Berkeley Lab's Dance Club will start a new series of lessons today on West Coast Swing. This dance is an earthier, funkier variation of swing that is best suited for MoTown, sultry rock, and blues music. This series will be guest-taught by the Lab's own Doris Bergman (Human Resources), who is also a professional dance teacher. The Monday lessons are free, as well as the Wednesday practice sessions, both held at noon in the Building 51 (Bevatron) lobby.
