Berkeley Lab Will Join
Bioenergy Center Race

Bush Administration officials said Wednesday they will plunge $250 million into a five-year hunt for the ideal germs and plants for producing biofuels as replacement for oil. A leading contender for both centers is said to be MIT. Another pulls together Berkeley Lab, UC Berkeley, Stanford, UC Davis, Livermore and Sandia labs — for a team calling itself the Joint Bio-Energy Institute. Steven Chu, head of Berkeley Lab, talks of great synergies to be had and said the institute is gunning for both British Petroleum and Energy Department research centers. Full story.

Warming's Health Effects

Expecting more heat-related deaths and health problems as global warming increases, California public health officials Wednesday announced a new plan to track heat-related fatalities and hospital visits over the next five years. The $4.5 million study, funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also will project how increased temperatures from global warming are expected to boost deaths and illnesses in decades ahead, including asthma emergencies, heat stroke and heart attacks. The research will be coordinated by the California Department of Health Services, with help from Berkeley Lab and the California Environmental Protection Agency. Full story.

The Lab at 100 — What
Will It Look, Feel Like?
A time capsule to be sealed at Founders Day on Aug. 26 will include, among other things, a list of employees' predictions about what Berkeley Lab, California and the world will be like in the year 2031 — the Lab's Centennial. To be included on the list, send your vision for the future here. Brevity is encouraged. The best entries will be highlighted at a special Founders Day ceremony. In addition, send suggestions for capsule contents that reflect what life on the Hill is like in 2006 (the cylindrical container is approximately 12 x 24 inches). Deadline for both 2031 predictions and other capsule content ideas is Friday, Aug. 11.

Free Electron Laser
Design Led by Lab
Scientists and engineers in the Accelerator and Fusion Research Division's Center for Beam Physics and Engineering Division recently completed the first year of an ongoing project to design a unique free electron laser for Italy's Elettra light source near Trieste. The Berkeley Lab team is leading the design effort in collaboration with scientists from Sincrotrone Trieste, who operate Elettra, and from MIT and SLAC. The new facility is called FERMI@Elettra and will be the first user-facility free electron laser to feature "seeded harmonic cascades," which allow exquisite control over both electron and photon beams to achieve high-power laser pulses. The Eyes Have It: Avoid
Injury Via Prevention
The Health Care Facilitator wants to remind everyone that August is “Eye Injury Prevention Month.” More than 2,000 people in the U.S. injure one of their eyes at work each day. Common causes for eye injuries include windblown dust, metal chips, or liquid splashes. Be sure to wear appropriate eye protection, keep the eyewear in good condition and be sure to get the proper fit. At Berkeley Lab, nonprescription safety glasses are available from Stores, and prescription safety glasses can be obtained at Health Services.
Weight Watchers Session
Begins on Wednesday
