Rosenfeld
Rosenfeld Symposium Sold Out; Webcast Set

A daylong symposium tomorrow on campus, honoring energy efficiency pioneer, former Berkeley Lab senior scientist, and UC Berkeley professor Arthur Rosenfeld, is sold out. However, a live webcast will be available here. On the occasion of Rosenfeld's 80th birthday, 11 eminent scientists and educators — including Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu, Division Director Mark Levine of Environmental Energy Technologies, and scientist Ashok Gadgil will speak on topical energy issues. The symposium's agenda (PDF) may be viewed here.

SAFETY NOTE

Trash Batteries
In Special Bins

Used batteries are collected in designated collection pails that are distributed throughout the Lab. Before placing the battery in the collection pail, employees should use the tape attached to each collection pail to cover the terminals of any battery that could short out, such as 9 volt, lantern, lithium, and silver oxide types. Also remove any external leads on a battery before placing it in the collection pail. Don't put any other items such as smoke detectors or electronic parts in these buckets. Go here for more information.

Physicist Gets DOE
Investigator Award

Bauer
Christian Bauer, with the Lab's Physics Division, is among the recipients of the Department of Energy Office of High Energy Physics "Outstanding Junior Investigator Award." The award seeks to assist the development of the research programs of outstanding untenured high-energy physicists. Bauer's research focuses on "developing model independent predictions of SM expectations needed to interpret experimental data, which is required to provide understanding of the underlying physics." Go here for more information on the award.

DOE Gasoline Price
Watch Website, Hotline

With fuel costs skyrocketing across the country, the Department of Energy wants to remind consumers of its online gasoline price-reporting system. Consumers can use the site to share information on local gasoline filling stations that they believe may be "gouging" or "price fixing." Also included is a primer on gasoline pricing and FAQ's about fuel costs. Full story.
