Lab Scientists Among New Members
Of Academy

Three Berkeley Lab researchers are among the 72 newly elected members of the National Academy of Sciences. Membership in NAS is considered one of the nation's highest honors for a scientist or engineer. Jillian Banfield, an earth scientist, Michael Marletta, a physical bioscientist, and David Patterson, a computer scientist, are Berkeley Lab's three newest NAS members. Their election brings the total number of Berkeley Lab NAS members to 59.
Full story.

Three Researchers
Elected to AAAS

Freedman
Oster
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) Monday announced the election of 175 new fellows, three of which are Berkeley Lab scientists. They include Stuart Freedman (Nuclear Sciences), David Patterson (Computational Research Division - pictured in NAS story, above), and George Oster (Physical Biosciences). Fellows and foreign honorary members are nominated and elected to the academy by current members. A membership comprised of scholars and practitioners from mathematics, physics, biological sciences, social sciences, humanities and the arts, public affairs and business, enables the academy to conduct a wide range of interdisciplinary studies and public policy research. IN THE NEWS

Cal Panel Gives Grim
Prognosis for Earth
By Douglas Fischer

At the inaugural event of the Berkeley Institute of the Environment last weekend, there was nothing but doom and gloom for the future. None of the trend lines identified by any of the four scientists gathered there looked sustainable. Berkeley Lab Earth Scientist Inez Fung is one of the world's foremost global warming theoreticians. And what startles her today is that worldwide observations perfectly mimic her predictions. Full story.

It's Official: Foundry
Gets the Good-to-Go

The Molecular Foundry team received the good news on Monday - its biggest milestone, the CD-4a (Critical Decision), was achieved to allow user operations to begin. And approval came one month earlier than anticipated. In a note to project leaders, Office of Science Federal Project Director Kathy Johnescu of the Berkeley Site Office expressed "my deep appreciation to everyone who has worked so diligently and for so long on this project. Please forward this to your other teammates — I know there are many more contributors."

Volunteers Help Make
Cal Day Booth a Success

Families came in droves to the UC Berkeley campus on Saturday for its annual open house. Berkeley Lab's booth at the event was staffed by employees and Center for Science and Engineering Education students. The Public Affairs Department would like to thank all those who offered their help to make this a success, including Patrick Guinness, Steve Garcia, Victor Chan, Girish Ghatikar, Kathleen Vasquez, Victor Chan, Heelo Sudo, and Olga Poblete.

Counseling For Those
Affected By Lab Death

Lab employees and cafeteria staff affected by the death of materials scientist Rowland Cannon last Friday can receive free, confidential grief counseling through CARE Services, located on the UC Berkeley campus. For more information, call 643-7754 or visit their website.

City Hosts BART
Plaza Design Review

Downtown Berkeley is changing, and now is the time to help shape its future. The City of Berkeley invites the community to review four different design options and select a preferred option for the Downtown Berkeley BART Plaza. The City is hosting a drop-in community open house on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at the Berkeley Central Library, Third Floor Community Meeting Room (2090 Kittredge Street). All members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend at any time during the open house. The public can view the design options on the City's website here.
