Computing Expert Voted
Vice Chair Of Society

Esmond Ng, leader of the Computational Research Division's Scientific Computing Group, has been elected to a two-year term as vice chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Supercomputing. SIAM is the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The activity group provides a forum for the exchange of ideas on mathematical algorithms and computer architecture needed for high-performance computer systems.

Campus Gathering Pays
Homage to Chamberlain

Berkeley Lab and the UC Berkeley campus will hold a memorial gathering on Sunday for Nobel laureate Owen Chamberlain, retired Lab physicist and Cal professor who died on Feb. 28 at age 85. The event begins at 2 p.m. in the Faculty Club's Great Hall. Go here for more information on the gathering, including a photo gallery, remembrances, and donations.

Staff Asked to Take
Procurement Survey

The Lab's Procurement group will conduct the first phase of a customer satisfaction survey this week. Surveys will be distributed to randomly selected employees via e-mail. Those who receive the survey will be asked to evaluate three customer service factors: timeliness, quality, and communications. Procurement will use the survey's results to improve mission performance. The data will be released to department managers, the University of California and the Department of Energy. Questions about the survey can be directed to Renee Jewell (x4597) or John Speros (x4569).

'Active for Life' Fitness
Program Meeting Today

The Lab's Health Care Facilitator office would like to invite employees to join "Active for Life," a 10-week program that encourages participants to be more physically active and eat healthier foods on a regular basis. Points are earned for positive lifestyle changes. A meeting to kick off this campaign will be held today from noon to 1 p.m. in Building 90-2063.

One of the most popular displays of equestrian ballet, the World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions have entertained millions in its 36 years of existence. It features 12 to 14 stallions that have been trained to perform intricate choreography and jumping maneuvers. Earth Month Talk
On East Bay Hiking

To celebrate Earth Month, the Lab is hosting a talk today by Rosemary Cameron on the hiking trails of the East Bay Regional Park District. The district covers over 95,000 acres of land, including 1,150 miles of trails, as well as recreation areas, shorelines, and preserves. The event begins at noon in Building 70-191.
