If
the Big One Hits:
Quake Exercise Today
Berkeley
Lab’s Emergency Operations Center will be
activated today as the Laboratory joins four other
city institutions in a simulated exercise on earthquake
response and recovery. It’s the 100th anniversary
of San Francisco’s 1906 earthquake today,
so the City of Berkeley is coordinating “Shockwave
Centennial.” The multi-agency exercise simulates
what would happen if the ’06 earthquake hit
today. The Lab’s emergency team will be training
in operations, information and coordination efforts.
The 9 to 11 a.m. drill includes, besides the Lab
and the city, Alta Bates medical center, the UC
Berkeley campus, and Bayer Health Care. Go here
for more information.
Asia-Pacific
Climate
Group Here This Week
The
Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and
Climate— formed last summer by the national
governments of Australia, China, India, Japan, the
Republic of Korea, and the United States—
has committed to advance its countries’ common
objectives to achieve cost-effective, cleaner, more
efficient technologies in energy and the environment.
Berkeley Lab, whose Environmental Energy Technologies
Division has been a resource for the American team,
will host the partnership’s first expert-level
working meetings today through Friday. Most sessions
will take place at the Claremont Hotel, although
a private reception and some breakout sessions for
the nearly 300 delegates will be on the Hill. Go
here
for more details on the partnership.
