Plants Less Absorbent
Of C02, Study Finds
By Dennis Lien

Fung
Plants won't suck up as much of the carbon dioxide contributing to global warming as scientists had hoped, a new study led by a University of Minnesota researcher found. "This is very important," said Berkeley Lab earth scientist Inez Fung. "We were counting on the plants to absorb fossil fuel carbons . . . but their results show we were too optimistic." Full story.

New Modeling Technique Maps Activity Underground
By Michael Kay

Sometimes the tools are available, but you just have to look around. Scientists borrowed a traditional tool of engineers to develop a new research approach that will help geochemists study the complicated underground workings of the earth. "It potentially provides a unified description of the coupled chemical, physical and biological processes that control many earth and environmental processes," said Lab earth scientist Carl Steefel. 'Cool Roof' Research
Gets $1.25 Million Award

The California Energy Commission recently awarded $1.25 million to Berkeley Lab for a three-year grant to develop, deploy, and validate "cool roof" technology. This project will accelerate the acceptance of cool roofs through rebate programs sponsored by utility companies, expand the quantity of cool roofing products, create more effective roofing materials, obtain labels from the Cool Roof Rating Council, and assist in marketing the new roofing products.
