Nuclear Scientists Host
Maui Physics Olympics
Berkeley Lab nuclear scientist Peggy McMahan Norris arranged a day of Physics Olympics team competitions on Sept. 17, on Maui, ahead of a meeting of the American Physical Society's Division of Nuclear Physics. High school and middle school science students competed to build brick cantilevers and load aluminum boats with marbles, with winners receiving World Year of Physics watches and runners-up getting Einstein "action" figures. McMahan was happy to see "more than three-quarters of the entrants were girls." Other Lab volunteers included Howard Matis, I-Yang Lee, and intern Bill Robbins.

NERSC Users Discuss
Their Research Results
Berkeley Lab employees are invited to a series of talks highlighting scientific accomplishments using NERSC (National Energy Research Science Computing). The talks are part of the NERSC Users' Group meeting being held Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the Bldg. 50 auditorium. At noon, NERSC Director Horst Simon will discuss "Progress in Supercomputing: The Top Three Breakthroughs of the Last 20 Years and the Top Three Challenges for the Next 20 Years." Afternoon talks by researchers from SUNY, Sandia Lab, and Berkeley Lab will cover supernova modeling, cell membrane visualization, turbulent combustion and the SNfactory search for nearby supernova. 457(b) Enroll, Change
Deadlines Coming Up
The Lab's Benefits Office would like to remind employees of two important deadlines related to enrollment in or changes to the 457(b) retirement plan. Actions taken by 5 p.m. today will be
reflected
in the Oct. 14/Nov. 1 paychecks, and by 5 p.m. on Oct. 31 in the Nov. 11/Dec. 1 paychecks. Go here for more information about the plan and its associated deadlines.
eRoom Service
Goes Lab-Wide
The Information Technology Division's eRoom is a web-based collaborative workspace where users can access task lists, databases, polling, project plans, chat rooms and files (with version control). eRoom offers cross-platform usability and can be configured for specific needs. After a successful pilot program, eRoom is planned to be offered as a recharge service in FY06. More information, including costs, registration, and instructions, is available here.
