Rescue Boxes Stocked
To Help Survive Disasters
In times of disaster or extreme emergencies, employees can access one of several outdoor rescue boxes that are positioned around the Lab. The boxes, maintained by the Environment, Health, and Safety Division, can be opened with a key stored behind glass, which can be broken during times of need. Inside are many life-saving items, such as bolt cutters, stretchers, a solar radio, first aid kits, water, and portable toilets. Staff are encouraged to be familiar with the location of the rescue box nearest their work site. Go here to see a map of locations.

Speaking
On Campus
As part of UC Berkeley's homecoming celebration this weekend, the campus is hosting a panel discussion among five Nobel Prize winners, including George Akerlof, Daniel McFadden (economics), Lab Director Steve Chu and Charles Townes (physics), and Donald Glaser (molecular and cell biology). The talk runs from 4:30 to 6 p.m. tomorrow in the Bechtel Engineering Center's Sibley Auditorium. Go here for more information.

Water Conservation:
Every Drop Counts
Berkeley Lab's Facilities Division has installed low-flow faucets, showers, and toilets to help reduce water consumption. However, a single leaky faucet, dripping at the rate of one drop per second, will waste over 11,000 liters of water in a year. Employees are asked to help conserve by shutting faucets tight and by reporting leaky faucets and running toilets to the Work Request Center.
Lab-Supported DSL
Ends Tomorrow
Lab-supported DSL service comes to an end tomorrow. Employees designated by their division's management as requiring high speed home access can choose their own service provider, and the Lab will reimburse users for 50 percent of the cost. The change is expected to significantly reduce the cost to the Lab while ensuring compliance with DOE guidelines. For details, go here.
