'Phylochip' Scans Flood Areas for Contaminants





Hazen

The floodwaters that filled the streets of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita are now heavily populated with bacteria, viruses and other disease-causing microbes that could pose a grave risk to residents long after the waters have been cleared. An experimental technology developed by Berkeley Lab scientist Terry Hazen — and members of the Earth Sciences Division's Ecology Department, which he heads — holds promise for use in situations like this to provide a comprehensive picture of bacterial presence in the air, soil and water and enable authorities to track how that presence changes over time. Budinger

Berkeley Lab life scientist Thomas Budinger, who heads the Nuclear Medicine and Functional Imaging group, has been elected as president of the Society of Molecular Imaging. The international scientific and educational organization seeks to advance understanding of biology and medicine through noninvasive in vivo investigation of cellular molecular events involved in normal and pathologic processes. Budinger's Lab group explores advanced positron emission tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, which are used to study cardiac function and brain disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

NIH Now Using Web
For Letters, Statements

The National Institutes of Health have eliminated paper mailings of summary statements and peer review outcome letters. Principal investigators must now use "eRA Commons," a website where the NIH and applicants can conduct extramural research administration electronically. Registration is required for use of this site. The Lab's Sponsored Projects Office has a form available here. Go here for more information about the program.
