Physicists Speak Out
On Oppenheimer Opera

The curtain has barely risen on the opera "Doctor Atomic," but the work has already started arguments at the American Physical Society, founded in 1899 "to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics." Before assuming the presidency of the society, Berkeley Lab materials scientist Marvin Cohen lobbied for the group to endorse the work. "When operas are good, they last an incredibly long time," Cohen said. "In 200 years, 'Doctor Atomic' may be the historical memory of the Manhattan Project." Full story (registration required).

Lab Water Expert to Help
Build Energy 'Roadmap'

Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chairman Pete Domenici recently addressed a congressionally authorized group charged with creating a "roadmap" for assuring sufficient energy and water in the future, encouraging them to "use innovation" to achieve this goal. The group includes representatives from 12 DOE laboratories and a diverse group of water experts, including Jim McMahon from Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division. McMahon is the head of the Energy Analysis Department, leader of the Energy Efficiency Standards group, and co-chair of the Water Energy Technology team. Full story.

Gas Leak Closes
Blackberry 3+ Hours

The main Blackberry Gate at Berkeley Lab reopened at around 4:45 p.m. yesterday after being closed for over three hours due to a truck accident that broke a natural gas pipe at the base of Cyclotron Road. A Pacific Gas and Electric crew capped off the pipe and completed repairs later in the afternoon. Students evacuated from the adjacent Foothill dormitories were allowed to return. No injuries were reported, and no one from Berkeley Lab was involved in the incident.

Volunteers Needed
To Prep For SHARES

Volunteers are needed to help launch SHARES, Berkeley Lab's charitable giving campaign, which starts Oct. 14. People are needed to help put together 4,000 informational packets that will be sent to all Berkeley Lab employees. Collating parties will be held Thursday, Oct. 6, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Friday, Oct. 7, 1 to 5 p.m. in Building 939-208. Free pizza will be provided. Employees interested in volunteering should contact Bernadette Cu-Todd (x5327) for more information.
