Glen Lambertson, veteran accelerator physicist at the Center for Beam Physics at Berkeley Lab, has been named to receive the Robert R. Wilson Prize, which is given by the American Physical Society to recognize and encourage outstanding achievement in the physics of particle accelerators. Lambertson won for his “fundamental contributions to accelerator science and technology, particularly in the area of beam electrodynamics including the development of beam instrumentation for the feedback systems that are essential for the operation of high luminosity electron and hadron colliders.” Frances Hellman, a physicist in the Materials Sciences Division, has been named to receive the Joseph F. Keithley Award, which recognizes advancements in measurement sciences.
Hellman won for her use of “emerging micromachining techniques to significantly extend the range of calorimetry into the realm of nano-scale science, by construction of silicon-based microcalorimeters capable of operating in extreme environments with unprecedented sensitivity.” Go here for a complete list of winners.

Illumina, Inc., of San Diego has announced that it will provide reagents and instrumentation for a groundbreaking study at Children’s Hospital Oakland that includes Berkeley Lab’s Life Sciences Division. The study is aimed at determining the impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on individual response to statins, a widely used class of cholesterol-lowering drugs. The study is being carried out as part of the NIH-funded research program, Pharmacogenomics and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease (PARC), to identify critical genetic determinants of response to statin therapy that could lead to the lowest-risk treatment for each patient. Draft EIR Issued
For Bevatron Removal

Berkeley Lab has issued a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the proposed demolition of the decommissioned Bevatron accelerator and the structure housing it. The draft EIR will be circulated for a 47-day period, from Oct. 21 through Dec. 7, for review and comment by governmental agencies and the public. A public hearing to collect comments will be held on Nov. 16. The Bevatron is a synchrotron accelerator that began operations in 1954 and was last operated in 1993. Flu, Pneumonia Vaccines
Available This Week

Health Services is offering to all Berkeley Lab employees inoculations for flu and pneumonia on three separate dates, the first one this Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. Call for an appointment at x6266. Other dates available are Thursday, Nov. 3, and Thursday, Nov. 10, both from 8 a.m. to noon. The first two sessions are at Health Services, and the third will be in Building 939 (the Power Bar building), specifically for people who work downtown. Flu vaccines will cost $21, and pneumonia vaccines will be $35.

For October ‘Fright Fest’

Tickets for Marine World's Fright Fest, good for next Friday, Saturday or Sunday, will be sold today through Wednesday in the cafeteria lobby by the Employee Activities Association. The $20 ticket includes entrance to the park as well as to Fright Fest activities. A meal ticket is also available for an additional $8.
