Talks, Workshops Set
at ALS Users' Meeting

The annual Advanced Light Source Users' Meeting will be held in the Building 50 Auditorium at Berkeley Lab Thursday through Saturday. Workshops will begin after lunch on Friday and continue through Saturday. A hosted awards dinner/buffet will be held on the ALS patio on Friday evening. The final program and other materials will be available at the registration desk on Thursday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. in the lobby of the auditorium. The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. Joachim Stöhr, Director, Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, will present a public lecture on "The Magic of Magnetism: From Physical Attraction to Spin Doctors" Thursday at 7:15 p.m. in the auditorium. 2005 SHARES Runaround

And the Winners Are…

Six hundred and forty runners and walkers participated in Friday’s SHARES Runaround, which marks the 28th consecutive time this annual 3 km race has been held. Justine Owen won the women’s race with a time of 13:18, and, for the fourth year in a row, Dula Parkinson won the men’s race with a time of 9:40. Complete results will be published in The View on Nov. 18, as well as in a couple of weeks on the Runaround website.

State Assembly Panel
To Visit Lab Tomorrow

Members of the State's Assembly Committee on Higher Education, chaired by Assemblywoman Carol Liu (D-Pasadena), are holding a hearing on the importance of University of California graduate education and research to California tomorrow afternoon at UC Berkeley. Prior to that session, they will tour Berkeley Lab from 11 a.m. to noon and have lunch with Director Steve Chu. Go here to view a list of Committee members.

Synthetic Biology Seminar
Series Kicks Off Oct. 25

The Synthetic Biology Department’s seminar series launches Oct. 25 with a lecture by MIT’s Alexander van Oudenaarden on noisy feedback regulation in gene networks. The series, which features seven speakers from around the U.S., takes place on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. in Bechtel Hall’s Sibley Auditorium. The Synthetic Biology Department hopes to webcast the lectures to people who can’t attend the events. Go here for more information.
