	Gardener Reaches New Heights with Tomatoes

	Berkeley Lab Assurance Engineer Karl Olson looks like he's staging his own scene from "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes." This cherry tomato plant that he grew in his El Sobrante yard peaked at just over 12 feet in height. To what does the 29-year Lab veteran attribute for the success of his garden? "All the (bull 'fertilizer') I amassed in three decades at the Lab that I finally put to good use," he joked.

Got Property? Time
To Track it Down

To meet requirements outlined in the new Department of Energy/ University of California contract, a mixed-asset inventory of Lab property will begin in January. With this advance notice, employees are encouraged to start identifying and locating items for which they are responsible. Staff can view the list of assets assigned to them by going here (click "Property Verification by Signature" link, scroll down to "custodian," enter employee ID number in "Identifier" field, and submit the form). Division administrators will provide additional information and guidance as the January target approaches.

The next issue of The View, the Lab's employee newspaper, will appear on Friday, Oct. 14. Deadline for submissions to the Flea Market section of the paper is this Wednesday. Story ideas and questions can be forwarded to Pam Patterson (x4045).

Life Scientist Assists
With Ontology Center





Lewis

As head of the Berkeley Drosophila Genome Project's bioinformatics group and a founder of the Gene Ontology Consortium, Suzanna Lewis has spearheaded many biological "ontologies" — ways of structuring otherwise incompatible databases so computers can use them in an integrated way. Now she's joining the Lab's Life Sciences Division, where she'll head the bioinformatics core of the National Institutes of Health's newly founded Center for Biomedical Ontology. Resolution Provides
Funds to Nov. 18

A continuing resolution funding most of the federal government through Nov. 18 passed the House last Thursday and the Senate on Friday. The resolution funds projects and activities at the lowest level of FY05, or the FY06 House or Senate bills. Staff for the House and Senate Energy and Water Appropriations committee, which funds most of Berkeley Lab's research, are working towards a conference agreement, hopefully in the next month. Focus on Breast Cancer
For Month of October

The Lab's Health Care Facilitator office would like to remind employees that October is "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month." In the United States, one out of every seven women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Early detection decreases the need for highly invasive treatments and increases chances of survival. Mammograms are recommended for woman over 40. Representatives from the Health Care Facilitator office will be in the cafeteria tomorrow, and on Tuesday, Oct. 18, from noon to 1 p.m., dispensing additional information about breast cancer.
