Chu at the all-hands meeting |

Full House For First
All-Hands Meeting
"The good news is that we have a new contract!" Lab Director Steve Chu exclaimed to open his first "State-of-the-Lab" talk yesterday in the Building 50 auditorium. During his talk the director covered a number of topics in addition to the new contract. He praised the legacy of Lab founder, E.O. Lawrence, expressed confidence that Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman will be an advocate for science, stressed the need for improving safety, and made a strong case for revitalizing the Lab's infrastructure. A story on the talk will appear in the May 27 issue of The View. While the contract is a public document, it will not be posted online until early June. Copies of the contract on a CD can be obtained by calling x5345.

Radiation, Laser Safety
Precautions for Students
Summer
students will soon be coming to the Lab to work
with researchers on projects involving the use of
radioactive material, radiation-producing machines,
and lasers. With that in mind, EH&S offers
a few reminders regarding Radiological Work Authorization
(RWA), Sealed Source Authorization (SSA), and the
Laser Safety Program. Go here
for a full list of guidelines.

Maria
Cantrell returned to El Cerrito High, her alma mater,
this past weekend to serve as grand marshal of a
parade honoring the school. After graduating, she
went on to study physics at UC Berkeley and, during
that time, worked at the Lab's Bevatron. She went
on to win the 1966 Miss USA pageant. Go here
to read a Contra Costa Times story on her
return to the Bay Area (registration required),
and here
to read a brief View item on Cantrell's
(nee Remenyi) work at the Lab, entitled "Bevatrons
and Beauty Queens."
