The spring issue of the Berkeley campus' graduate student publication, "Berkeley Science Review," includes a feature article on "Intelligent Design," with focus on Berkeley Lab's Synthetic Biology Department. Among those featured in the article are Lab Deputy Director Graham Fleming and the Department's chair, Jay Keasling. Other articles highlight the work of earth scientist Sally Benson in carbon sequestration, the history of optical microscopy, and an interview with UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau. gathering at the North Berkeley Senior Center was
held last Thursday to answer questions and take
public testimony on the latest round of Berkeley
Lab cleanup efforts, which center on four areas
of soil contamination and 11 areas of groundwater
pollution. Cleanup plans call for a variety of remediation
efforts based on the nature of the contamination
and the characteristics of individual sites. Full

The Lab's first-ever "Summer Wellness Fair" takes place tomorrow between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the cafeteria lawn. Activities include music, chair massages, body fat analyzers, and information on exercise and nutrition. Employees can also tour the "Dental Mobile," a new service that will soon launch.

Plan to Bolster K-12
Science, Math Teaching
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger joined the University of California, California State University and business leaders yesterday in announcing the creation of a new effort to enhance the supply and preparation of science and mathematics teachers for the state's public schools. Under the "California Teach" program, the UC system over the next several years will quadruple its annual production of credentialed science and mathematics teachers. Full story.
