DOE NEWS

New DOE Site Includes
Lab Energy Website

The Department of Energy, in conjunction with the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Environmental Protection Agency, has recently formed the "Partnerships for Home Energy Efficiency." The trio of agencies will work together to reduce home energy bills by 10 percent over the next decade. The effort includes the creation of a new website, www.energysavers.gov, which features a link to the Lab's "Home Energy Saver" website, developed by the Environmental Energy Technologies Division. Go here to read DOE Secretary Samuel Bodman's remarks on this new collaborative.

SAFETY NOTES

Understand Ergonomic
Injuries to Prevent Them

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) result from repeated movements and awkward postures that fatigue, strain and permanently damage soft tissues. Improper use and/or overuse of muscles and tendons in the fingers, hands, arms, shoulders, neck and back can cause cell damage by depleting oxygen and nutrients in the tissues. Because these body parts are used daily, they are given little opportunity to repair themselves. Leisure time activities can also strain the same tissues used at work and compound the problem. Understanding the conditions that can cause RSI can lead to modified actions, tools, or equipment that can reduce the potential for body damage. Contact Jeffrey Chung (x5818) for further assistance. Go here for details on how to reduce ergonomic risk exposure.

Extra EH&S ORPS
Class Now Available

The Lab's Environment, Health and Safety Division has added an additional session of its class on Occurrence Reporting and Processing Systems (ORPS) (EHS 802). It takes place on Friday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Go here for more information and to enroll. Or call x2228 for more information.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Summer Lecture Explores Combustion Computations

The next installment of the Lab's Summer Lecture Series will be held today at noon in the Building 50 auditorium. The featured speaker is John Bell, senior staff mathematician and group leader for the Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering. He will discuss the role that computation plays in deciphering the mysteries of combustion. The next speaker in the series, seismologist Barbara Romanowicz, will lecture on Wednesday, July 20.

Learn More About
Lab Clubs at Fair

The Lab's Employee Activities Association sponsors nearly 20 different clubs, which engage in such activities as dancing, yoga, martial arts, and cultural events. Employees can learn more about these groups by attending a "Meet the Clubs" fair next Wednesday, July 20, from noon to 1 p.m. on the cafeteria lawn. Refreshments and entertainment will be provided. Go here for more information.

Expert to Offer Tips
On Smoking Cessation

Smoking cessation expert Marcia Brown-Machen will visit the Lab tomorrow from noon to 1 p.m. to discuss how tobacco is marketed, smoke-related diseases, ways to prevent smoking, and tips on quitting. Her presentation in Perseverance Hall is sponsored by the Lab's Health Care Facilitator office. Brown-Machen is the director of the City of Berkeley's Tobacco Prevention Program.
