UC/Bechtel to Manage
Los Alamos Lab

The Department of Energy yesterday awarded the contract to manage the Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico to the Los Alamos National Security LLC, a team comprised of the University of California, Bechtel National, BWX Technologies and the Washington Group. Biocenter Today

Lab employees who work in the Berkeley West Biocenter, on Potter St. in Berkeley, can stop by the Red Cross Bloodmobile that will be parked around the corner (700 Heinz Ave.) today. IceCube Engineer Braves Cold of Antarctica

Beattie
While many people have turned their attention to activities at the North Pole, Keith Beattie of the Computational Research Division's Distributed Systems Department has been focused on the IceCube project at the South Pole. Beattie, a software engineer who has been working on testing the data acquisition software for IceCube, wrapped up his three-week stint there yesterday. Sickle Cell Research
Licensed to MannKind

Rubin

Berkeley Lab recently executed a non-exclusive license with MannKind Corporation to transfer mice carrying a gene coding for human sickle hemoglobin.   Under the agreement, MannKind Corporation plans to use the mice for the current research on the causes and treatments of sickle cell disease. These mice were originally developed by Berkeley Lab Genomics Division Director Eddy Rubin and colleagues in the Life Sciences Division.

Avoid Attack: Shut Down Computers Over
Holiday Break

Lab computers are targeted more frequently over the holidays than at any other time. Unless it is absolutely necessary that it stay running, employees should shut down their computers. Those who must keep it running should update the appropriate security patches to prevent or limit attacks. If an attack has occurred, contact the Computer Protection Program.
