By
Elizabeth Weise

Phyllis Pei, Division Director for Environment, Health and Safety, will change roles and support Chief Operations Officer David McGraw in a new safety initiative, it was announced Tuesday. Pei will work on benchmarking other Office of Science laboratories and industry safety cultures and will recommend best-in-class practices for Berkeley Lab. "Given the extreme importance of establishing a safe work environment at Berkeley Lab, as well as Phyllis' extensive experience in both the public and private sectors, I have asked her to devote full time to lead this effort," McGraw said. Howard Hatayama, ES&H Director for the Laboratory Management Office at the University of California's Office of the President, will serve as acting Division Director of EH&S, effective Jan. 2. There will also be a second, similar interruption after the holiday break, starting at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 to reconnect to the original power source, which is also expected to last an hour. For more information, contact the Help Desk (x4357).
