Japanese Energy Forum





Marnay

Chris Marnay, leader of the Distributed Energy Resources group in the Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division, gave the keynote address at the Hachinohe International Energy Forum last month in Japan's Aomori prefecture. Hachinohe City is a key center for energy research, the site of a $25 million electricity microgrid project and future host of an $800 million fusion energy research center. Marnay's address was entitled "Microgrids: A Rare Paradigm Shift in Electricity Generation and Delivery." His Powerpoint presentation can be viewed here.

Lab Scientist Presents
Fuel Cell Talk in Korea





Cairns

Elton Cairns, a scientist in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division, recently attended the Second Clean & Renewable Energy International Forum in Korea, where he presented an invited paper on "Fuel Cell Technology: Current Developments and Market Status." A small portion of the talk was presented on the Korean TV evening news. The purpose of the meeting was to provide a forum for Korean federal and district governments to hear about the latest energy technologies and to discuss the new and renewable energy development initiative for Korea's Chollabuk-do province.

Takes Place Today

Yesterday's edition of Today at Berkeley Lab listed the incorrect day for a talk by representatives of Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI). They will visit the Lab today from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Building 50B-4205. Their visit is sponsored by the Computational Research Division's Visualization Group

DOE Project Assessment Chief to Speak at 2 p.m.

Dan Lehman, director of the Office of Science's Office of Project Assessment, will present a lecture today on "Large Science Project Experience at the DOE" at 2 p.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium. Go here for more information.

New Emergency Phone Service Launches Today

A new phone alert system, "Enhanced 911," will be activated today, making it easier and faster for emergency responders to locate employees who call emergency numbers (7911, 911, or 9911). The service provides the building and office number of employees who call one of these extensions. Previously, these calls showed up as being from "One Cyclotron Road." A demonstration of Enhanced 911 will be held in the cafeteria today from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. by Information Technology Division staff and local fire department representatives. Mail Box Temporarily
Out of Commission

The U.S. Postal Service mailbox outside the ATM machine near the cafeteria was displaced in a minor automobile accident on Tuesday afternoon. Employees are assured that once repairs are made, the box will be returned to its regular service.

'World AIDS Day'
Raises Awareness





AIDS virus

The Lab's Health Care Facilitator office wants to remind employees that today is "World AIDS Day." HIV is the virus known to cause AIDS. If people are HIV-positive, it means they have been infected with the virus. Those infected with HIV do not have AIDS until the virus seriously damages their immune system. HIV is transmitted through body fluids and is one of the biggest health challenges in the world, which claims over 8,000 lives every day. Go here for more information.

Employees Should Avoid Unauthorized Commitments

Laboratory employees and visitors are reminded that authority to make contractual commitments for the expenditure of Laboratory funds is held only by specifically designated individuals, primarily assigned to the Office of the Chief Financial Officer/Procurement & Property Department. Only these formally designated individuals may commit the Laboratory to the expenditure of funds. Individuals without delegated authority who make unauthorized purchases or commitments are subject to disciplinary action and may be held responsible for part or all of the costs incurred. Obtaining Procurement Ratification of each unauthorized commitment becomes the responsibility of the Division that makes the commitment, and the Division Director bears the burden of justifying why the purchase is in the best interest of the Laboratory.
