Lab Physicist Included
In Einstein Webcast

Nielsen

Berkeley Lab physicist Jason Nielsen is among several scientists participating in a 12-hour live webcast tomorrow called "Beyond Einstein," produced in conjunction with the World Year of Physics. Nielsen will appear on a program called "The Late Show With Leon Lederman," to discuss the use of particle detectors to reconstruct possible Higgs boson decays (Lederman is the former director of Fermilab). The program runs from noon to 2:30 p.m. Go here to access the webcast.

Construction Will Alter
Bancroft Route Today

Due to construction on Centennial Drive near the Botanical Gardens, the Bancroft shuttle bus will today use Blackberry Gate to leave and enter the Lab. The bus will access Bancroft Ave. via Gayley Road, then stop at Buildings 62/66, 74 and 84, and Blackberry Gate upon its return. The normal route will resume tomorrow.

Holiday Power Shutdown
In Buildings 50A and 50B

A power outage is planned from 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28 for Building 50A, and 7 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29 until 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30 for Building 50B. Additional details will be announced in Today at Berkeley Lab over the next two weeks.

New Lab Institute
Opens Doors Today

The Berkeley Lab Institute (BLI), a new professional training and skills improvement center for employees, welcomes visitors to its location to gather information and enjoy refreshments today until 5 p.m. At the Building 4 (Bus Stop #9) center just above the Advanced Light Source, staff can meet the BLI teaching team, including Institute Director Karen Ramorino, and see the assortment of classes, resources and learning opportunities available. Programs in administrative skills, supervisor/ manager leadership development, communications, and work-and-life how-to's are offered. Go here to read more about BLI.

Craft Fair Showcases
Handmade Items

The annual Berkeley Lab craft fair will he held Thursday, Dec 8, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Sponsored by the Employee Activities Association, the fair will feature a variety of handmade goods for sale, such as jewelry, photography, wreaths, candles, baked goods, tamales, art, blankets, clothes, music boxes, and pottery. Visualization Tools

Representatives from Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) will visit Berkeley Lab tomorrow to share information about recent hardware and software visualization products. The seminar will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Building 50B-4205. Sponsored by the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center's Visualization Group, the talk is open to staff using or interested in scientific visualization hardware and software technology.
