Special Engineering
Limits Foundry Vibration

In designing and building Berkeley Lab's Molecular Foundry, engineers had to tackle a unique challenge: building a vibration-sensitive laboratory for nanotechnology research on a tight, steep site with a fire lane cutting off one corner. An article in Engineering News-Record explains how they solved this problem. Full story.

Changes Announced
In Director's Staffing

Office Reorganization

Lab Director Steve Chu has announced a reorganization of the Director's Immediate Office.   Administrator Janice Magee is taking on a new assignment in Operations. Administrative assistant Tara White, who has been with the Lab for seven years, has accepted a position outside the Laboratory beginning tomorrow. And Chief of Staff Pat Oddone (see below), will also be leaving the Directorate. "These individuals have served the Directorate and the Laboratory extremely well over the years, and I thank them sincerely for their many contributions," said Chu.

Pat Oddone

Pat Oddone, who has served for more than 22 years as Chief of Staff to three Laboratory Directors, will be moving to a new position within the Laboratory. She came to the Lab in 1983 after 10 years at the University of California Office of the President to serve as assistant to then-Lab Director David Shirley, and she remained in that position for the 15 years that Charles Shank directed the Lab. "Pat's long and distinguished service supporting the Directorate and the individual division directors, plus her many contributions working with the Office of Science, were valued by all who benefited from her experience," said her third Lab Director, Steve Chu. "We all owe her a debt of gratitude."
