Chemla Era at ALS Ends;
'Visionary' to Step Down





Chemla

Daniel Chemla, who in his 15 years of senior management at Berkeley Lab transformed the Advanced Light Source into a major international research center, will step down from his division director position. In a memo to ALS staff last week, Lab Director Steve Chu cited Chemla's "visionary" and innovative work in materials sciences, nanoscience, and synchrotron source science. "I am in awe of his record and grateful for his legacy," Chu stated. Acting ALS Director Janos Kirz will continue to head the facility until a nationwide search, led by Associate Laboratory Director Paul Alivisatos, concludes. Read Chu's memo here.

'Cold Linac' Section

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory has met a crucial milestone on its way to completion in June 2006 — the operation of the superconducting section of its linear accelerator. The SNS linac has two sections: a room-temperature, or warm, section, which completed its commissioning last January, and a superconducting, or cold, section, which operates at temperatures hundreds of degrees below zero. Berkeley Lab researchers assisted in the construction of the SNS. Full story.

Garners Softball Championship

Rated X is the champion of the Lab's softball league 2005 season. They beat second place team SUDZ 10-2 last Wednesday. Third place went to Silver and Black (who lost to SUDZ 5-3). Seven teams in all participated in this year's season. League Commissioner Steve Blair (with Facilities) would like to thank all employees who participated.
