University Harvests
For Alternative Fuel
By Paul Meincke

Here we are in the depths of January and it's finally harvest time in west central Illinois. But this is no ordinary harvest — the plant is Miscanthus Giganteus. This is the biggest Miscanthus research project anywhere, and the hope is that what has been grown outside Champaign will offer another option toward energy independence. Last year, the governors of Illinois and California celebrated a half-billion dollar grant from British Petroleum that teams the University of Illinois, UC Berkeley, and Berkeley Lab for research on developing bioenergy and alternative fuels. Turn Off ‘Vampires’
To Cut Energy Bills

By Rebecca Clarren

There are insomniacs in our homes that run up the electricity bill. Microwave ovens, computers and TVs suck down power even when in sleep or standby mode. This "vampire energy loss" accounts for one percent of the world's carbon emissions, according to Alan Meier, with Berkeley Lab’s Environmental Energy Technologies Division. "When a consumer thinks the device is off, it should be using as little power as possible," says Meier. "But in their haste to get products onto the market, manufacturers don't make those modest design improvements, and we, the consumers, pay the price in unnecessarily high standby power use."
