|
A recent study reports the whole-genome sequence of Deinococcus geothermalis, only the second for an extremely radiation- and desiccation-resistant bacterium. The first was for Guinness World Records-holder Deinococcus radiodurans, which for 50 years has been the subject of extensive investigations aimed at solving the mystery of how this microbe and its close relatives survive immense doses of x-rays and gamma-rays. $30 Million Provided
For Bioenergy Centers
The Department of Energy announced the investment of nearly $30 million to accelerate the start-up of its three new Bioenergy Research Centers. The Centers — including Berkeley Lab’s Joint Bioenergy Institute — bring together multidisciplinary teams of leading scientists to advance research needed to make cellulosic ethanol and other biofuels commercially viable on a national scale. A delegation from the China Building Materials Academy (CMBA) participated in a one-day workshop on Monday at Berkeley Lab. The workshop included presentations by CBMA and Lab researchers on a variety of topics related to industrial energy efficiency and building materials. Mark Levine, leader of the Lab’s China Energy Group, and CMBA President Yao Yan signed a Memorandum of Understanding in which the two organizations agreed to explore potential future collaborations on technologies, policies, and programs related to energy efficiency in cement manufacturing.
Flu Clinics to be Held
In October, November
With flu and pneumonia season just around the corner, the Lab’s Health Services Department is offering vaccine clinics to help protect Lab employees. The sessions will take place on Thursday, Oct. 18, and Friday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to noon in Building 26; Thursday, Nov. 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Joint Genome Institute; and on Friday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to noon in Building 937 (downtown Berkeley). Cost is $10 for the flu vaccine and $35 for pneumonia. An appointment must be made to receive services (x6266). Go here for more information on the flu.
SHARES Campaign
Kicks Off Oct. 19
Berkeley Lab’s annual charitable giving campaign called SHARES — Science for Health, Assistance, Resources, Education and Services — kicks off Oct. 19 at the SHARES Runaround. Visit representatives from several charities at the post-run celebration at the cafeteria during the noon hour. Employees can donate online or by filling out a donation form, which will be mailed to all employees by Oct. 19. The campaign, which runs through Nov. 16, is a convenient way to assist non-profit health and service agencies while supporting the Lab's commitment to the community. Go here for more information. Staff Invited to User Building Groundbreaking Today
All Berkeley Lab employees are invited to attend a 30-minute groundbreaking ceremony at 12:15 p.m. today to officially launch construction of the Advanced Light Source User Support Building. ALS Director Roger Falcone, Lab Deputy Director Graham Fleming, and DOE Office of Science Basic Energy Sciences Associate Director Pat Dehmer are among those speaking and wielding the shovels at the construction site, just west of Building 80 at the Renner Deck. Another groundbreaking is scheduled for tomorrow at noon at the site of the forthcoming Berkeley Lab Guest House, a low-cost accommodation for future Lab guests. Employees are invited to that one, too, just west of Building 2.
