Lab Issues Draft Impact
Report for CRT Facility

Berkeley Lab issued the draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the proposed Computational Research and Theory (CRT) Facility today. The draft EIR provides an assessment of the CRT Facility and its potential effects on the environment. It will be available at the Lab’s Community Relations CRT website by 5 p.m. today. It is also available at the Berkeley Lab Library and the Berkeley Public Library. The comment period for the draft EIR extends from today to Jan. 4. A public hearing will be held at the North Berkeley Senior Center on Dec. 10. More information on the CRT Facility, including how it will advance Lab research, is available here. Contact [email protected] with questions.

SPECIAL EVENT

Retiree Club Turns 25
With Lunch, Chu Talk

The EX-Ls, Berkeley Lab’s retiree organization, will celebrate its 25th anniversary at a luncheon on Thursday at the Berkeley Yacht Club.  Lab Director Steve Chu will address the group on “New Directions of the Laboratory.”  Founded in 1982, EX-L members benefit from continued association with the Lab and with their fellow employees through quarterly luncheons and newsletters. Those interested in joining the club or hearing Chu speak are invited to attend the luncheon. Send e-mail here to register by 5 p.m. on Monday. Cost is $25. For more information about the EX-Ls, contact Suzanne Stroh (510-524-1953) or visit the club’s website.

Broken DNA Moved
To ‘Repair Shops’

Mapped DNA repair sites
When high-speed particles of space radiation zip through an astronaut's body, they will occasionally strike and break a strand of DNA. Scientists have long thought that enzymes always go to the site of injury and fix the DNA damage in place, but new research suggests that cells might sometimes move broken DNA to special "repair shops" instead. As part of this research, a team led by Berkeley Lab life scientist Sylvain Costes simulated space radiation by exposing lab-grown human cells to one of three radiation types: gamma rays, X-rays, and high-energy iron nuclei generated in the particle accelerator at NASA's Space Radiation Laboratory. Full story.

COMPUTER UPDATE

Help Desk Now Open
At 7 a.m. Weekdays

To accommodate staff who start work early, the Information Technology Division’s Help Desk will now have one person on duty starting at 7 a.m. Though coverage cannot be guaranteed in the event of an unplanned absence, the service will provide greater assistance to those experiencing computer problems between 7 and 8 a.m. The Mac/PC Support Group will also provide “best effort” assistance starting at 7 a.m. and will be paged if the Help Desk cannot resolve the problem. To reach the Help Desk, call x4357 (HELP) or submit an online request to http://help/.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

December Paychecks
To Be Posted Jan. 2

Due to strict IRS rules and regulations on income received at year-end, December paychecks for Lab employees will not be available until Jan. 2. Any check or direct deposit received before Jan. 1 will be considered income for 2007 and should be reported as such, as it will result in 13 paychecks for the year. Since Jan. 1 is a bank holiday, all delivered checks will be available on Jan. 2 at the employee’s mail stop.  All direct deposits will be posted in employee accounts on Jan. 2.
