DOE Approves Lab’s
Safety, Health Program

The Department of Energy has approved Berkeley Lab’s Worker Safety and Health Program, or PUB-3851, which defines the Lab’s worker safety and health requirements and specifies enforcement mechanisms. The regulations are generally the same OSHA rules that the Lab follows, but the enforcement mechanism is new, which includes fines. The plan is required under a new federal safety regulation, 10 CFR 851, which requires DOE sites to establish a worker protection program that reduces or prevents the potential for injuries, illnesses, and accidental losses by providing workers with a safe and healthful workplace. The program, an extension of the Lab’s Integrated Safety Management System, was developed over the past two years by the Environment Health & Safety Division, in conjunction with the DOE’s Berkeley Site Office. Go here for more information. Go here to read PUB-3851.

Chu Speaks on Water
Supplies in NPR Show

Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu conducted an interview with NPR affiliate KPBS in San Diego on how climate change will threaten California's water supply by the end of the century." This is not just Sierra snowpack, this is happening all over the world," said Chu on the program.Go here to listen to the entire interview.

Nanotechnology Expert
Gets Waterman Award

Yang

Lab materials scientist Peidong Yang has received the 2007 Waterman Award from the National Science Foundation. He was honored for his pioneering research on "nanowires," which show promise in creating a range of high-tech devices, including tiny lasers, computer circuits, and biological sensors. Go here to read a UC Berkeley press release on the award and view of Yang discussing the award, and here for an Oakland Tribune story.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Lab Parking, Access
Difficult Tomorrow

Berkeley Lab will be hosting Gov. Schwarzenegger’s symposium on low-carbon fuel tomorrow in Building 66 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking around Buildings 62, 66 and 67 will be limited, and restricted in the Blackberry Canyon lot. Events at the campus's Greek Theater and Math Sciences Research Institute will also complicate Lab access. Employees should take public transportation or discuss work alternatives, like telecommunting, with their supervisors.

Potluck for 'Active'
Participants Today

Employees who completed the 'Active for Life' program are invited to attend a potluck lunch today in Perseverance Hall (noon to 1 p.m.). The program, sponsored by Berkeley Lab's Health Care Facilitator's office, improves fitness and health through a point system, which is tracked online.

Share Thoughts on Food
Service Through Survey

Employees are asked to fill out a brief, five-minute survey on the food services provided at Berkeley Lab. The feedback will help the cafeteria offer the best possible customer service. Go here to take the anonymous survey.

POLICY NOTE

Contacts with State and Federal Officials

Employees may not act or give the appearance of acting on behalf of the Laboratory or the University when communicating with state or federal officials unless they are authorized to do so. To act or give the appearance of acting on behalf of the Laboratory or the University in such instances without authorization may be construed as a conflict of interest.
