Lab-on-a-Chip Device Speeds Proteomics

The era of genomics — the study of genes and their functions — is now making way for the era of proteomics: the study of proteins that genes encode. Future proteomics research should see a substantial acceleration with the development of a new device that provides the first monolithic interface between mass spectrometry and silicon/silica-based microfluidic “lab-on-a-chip” technologies. This new device, called a multinozzle nanoelectrospray emitter array, was developed by a team led by Daojing Wang, of the Lab's Life Sciences Division, and Peidong Yang, of the Materials Sciences Division. Full story.

Heat Island Group Gets
Energy Efficiency Award

The Environmental Energy Technologies Division's Heat Island Group has won a 2007 "Flex Your Power" award in the Innovative Products category for the development of Cool Color Roofing materials. The project team, Hashem Akbari, Paul Berdahl and Ronnen Levinson, worked with private firms representing the majority of U.S. roofing products to develop energy-efficient roofing that can reduce air conditioning energy use by 10 to 20 percent. "Flex Your Power" award winners have saved more than $172 million, one billion kilowatt hours and reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 80,000 cars from the road.

Management Workshops
Available for Employees

The Berkeley Lab Institute (BLI) invites employees to participate in workshops sponsored by the Institute for Management Studies (IMS). The daylong workshops feature top faculty presenting information on a variety of topics for all levels of management. Because the University of California is a member of IMS, Lab employees can participate at a reduced rate of $325 per session. Sessions are held in San Francisco once or twice a month. Go here to learn more about the workshops and to register, or call 925-736-8059.

Latest 'Travel Express'
Now Posted Online

Information on the development of a new travel expense reimbursement system, tips on obtaining passports, and the use of hand sanitizers to stay germ-free while on trips, are among the topics covered in the latest issue of Travel Express. Go here to read the publication.

May is Arthritis
Awareness Month

The Lab's Health Care Facilitator’s office reminds employees that May is “National Arthritis Month.”  Early diagnosis and treatment of arthritis can often mean less joint damage and pain. Doctors may recommend a combination of medication, weight management, exercise, and methods to protect your joints from further damage. For more information, go here.
