 In This Week’s Quest
KQED’s QUEST science series featured an episode, “Nanotechnology Takes Off,” broadcast Tuesday night that was filmed at the Molecular Foundry and featured Paul Alivisatos among the guests. The show can be viewed in its entirety via PC on the QUEST website and will also be replayed on KQED HD (Comcast 709) on Friday at 8 p.m., and again on KQED Channel 9 at 10:30 p.m. The website also offers links to related materials that feature the Lab. Lab Featured in KGO-TVFlex-Fuel Car Feature
A news item on flex-fuel vehicles, which U.S. automakers demonstrated to President Bush at the White House earlier this week, featured Berkeley Lab as one of the few places in California where such cars could fuel up. Flex-fuel cars burn ethanol, a byproduct of corn or sugar cane, and at present less than 1 percent of U.S. gas stations carry the blend. To view the video, which also features UC Berkeley Professor Dan Kammen, go here.

 Highlights Bioenergy
Four hundred researchers tapping the massive flow of DNA sequence information are gathered this week to share their recent developments at the 2nd Annual Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI) User Meeting. The meeting, which is being held through Friday at the Walnut Creek Marriott Hotel, is highlighting the latest advances in DNA sequencing for bioenergy, carbon management and bioremediation. Berkeley Lab’s Jay Keasling spoke yesterday on Engineering Microbes for Production of Low-Cost, Effective, Anti-Malarial Drugs.

 CSEE Seeking Mentors
 To Host Teachers
Berkeley Lab's Center for Science and Engineering Education is seeking research investigators willing to host high school and middle school science teachers. Twenty-five teachers will spend eight weeks this summer at the Lab as teacher research associates. Investigators interested in hosting a teacher from June 18 to Aug. 10 should contact Rollie Otto at (X2648 or [email protected]) for more information and to review teacher applications. Descriptions of the Teacher Scientist program can be found here.

 DOE Releases JournalOf Undergraduate Research
The Office of Science has released Volume 6 of the Journal of Undergraduate Research, a compilation of papers and abstracts by undergraduate students at DOE Labs during FY 2005. The cover of the journal, which recognizes the importance of mentoring relationships, features several photos of Berkeley Lab students and mentors.
The Journal is available as a pdf file here. To request a hard copy, contact CSEE.
