Work Survey Brown Bag
In Perseverance Hall Today
Lab Director Steve Chu invites interested staff to join him today at noon for a brown-bag meeting in Perseverance Hall to discuss the results of the first-ever employee workplace survey. More than 1,700 employees offered their views in last summer’s survey, and the Director wants to explore those responses with an eye toward improving the laboratory environment. Data from the survey and links to prior stories can be found here (login authentication required).

Oscar Meets
George Smoot
At last month's Oscar ceremonies in Hollywood, 2006 Nobelist George Smoot accompanied Academy member Elizabeth Cohen of Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. Smoot met with Sid Ganis, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and with the director of the Academy's Technical Council, Andrew Maltz, and others to discuss ways of encouraging further contributions of science and engineering to the arts. Smoot also found time to chat with notables including Spike Lee and Al and Tipper Gore.

Rep. Capps Tours
Berkeley Lab
On Friday, March 16, U.S. Congresswoman Lois Capps toured Berkeley Lab and met with Director Chu to discuss the importance of federal funding of basic science, and the important role that the DOE Office of Science plays in maintaining America's innovation leadership. Rep. Capps represents Santa Barbara and has served in Congress since 1998. She serves on the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee and on the Committee on Natural Resources. Her daughter was the former Executive Director of Government Affairs for UC Berkeley, and her son-in-law, Nathan Brostrom, is currently the Vice Chancellor for Administration.
