UC Mandates Online
Ethics Briefing for Staff

A message from Lab Director Steve Chu to all employees:

The University of California Office of the President believes all employees should be familiar with and live up to the Statement of Ethical Values and the Standards of Ethical Conduct.which were adopted by the UC Regents in May 2005. To promote these values in the workplace, the University is requiring all UC and Berkeley Lab employees to take an online Ethics Briefing. Employees will be receiving their briefing notice via e-mail on Thursday. Senior Lab Management has already taken the online briefing. Extending it to the rest of the Laboratory staff provides all of us at Berkeley Lab with a common frame of reference for ethical conduct at the Laboratory. I encourage all employees and supervisors to take time to focus seriously on the issues raised by the briefing. The ethical values we hold in common and communicate to others in the Lab are crucial for the success of Berkeley Lab.  (More details are available in this Director's memo to employees)

S&E Hiring, Promotion
Policies Subject of Forum

The first of two “Town Hall” meetings to discuss proposed changes to the hiring and promotion policies for scientists and engineers (S&E) will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the Building 50 Auditorium. Lab Deputy Director Graham Fleming and Scientific Advancement Committee chair Natalie Roe will review the proposals and respond to questions from the audience. The meeting will be shown live via video link in the Building 66 Auditorium and at the Joint Genome Institute, Bldg. 100-149C. A second meeting will be held on March 22 at 2 p.m. The new policies are undergoing a 30-day review and can be read here.

Lawrence's Nobel
Prize Is Stolen
By Kristin Bender

Lawrence in 1935
Ernest Lawrence's Nobel Prize -- a medal made of 23-karat gold and valued at about $4,000 -- has been stolen from a locked display case at the Lawrence Hall of Science in the Berkeley hills, police said Monday. UC Berkeley police say the coin-like 1939 prize in physics was housed with other artifacts of Lawrence's life and work in the publicly accessible and sprawling E.O. Lawrence Memorial Room at the science museum. On Thursday morning, a staff member noticed that the medal was missing and the display case was empty. Full story.

Fungus Genome Sequenced; Can Aid Biofuel Production

Pichia stipitis
On the road to making biofuels more economically competitive with fossil fuels, there are significant potholes. For cellulosic ethanol production, one major detour is being addressed with the genetic sequencing of the fungus Pichia stipitis, by the Joint Genome Institute and collaborators at the U.S. Forest Service. P. stipitis is the most proficient microbial fermenter in nature of the five-carbon “wood sugar” xylose, which represent a motherlode of bioenergy fodder. Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Head of German Computing Center Visits NERSC Today

Lippert

Thomas Lippert, director of the Central Institute for Applied Mathematics at Research Center Juelich in Germany, will give a talk at 9:30 a.m. today on “HPC at the Research Center Juelich: Experience with BG/L and Future Plans,” in Bldg. 943-238 (Oakland Scientific Facility) and via videoconference to Bldg. 50B-2222.

INVENTORY UPDATE

Nearly 19,500 Assets Found; 1,370 Still Uncounted

Thanks to the diligence of many employees, nearly 19,500 assets have been scanned since the start of the Lab's wall-to-wall inventory in January, totaling about $570 million. As the March 31 deadline looms, there are 1,368 assets worth approximately $60 million yet to be counted. Everyone is encouraged to work with property management representatives to help account for these remaining items.
