Summer Lecture Today: Treating Brain Tumors

Brain tumor
Today at noon in the Building 50 auditorium, Trudy Forte, a senior scientist in the Lab’s Life Sciences Division and a staff scientist at Children’s Hospital of Oakland Research Institute, will discuss her work developing nano-sized low-density lipoprotein particles that can be used as a safe and effective means of delivering anticancer drugs to brain tumors. Forte has been with Berkeley Lab for about 35 years and with Children’s Hospital of Oakland Research Institute for 3 years. Go here for a complete schedule of this summer's lectures.

Physics Web Site Debuts New 'Look and Feel'

The Physics Division has launched its new website, which offers Lab users easy navigation, and headlines popular topics such as “Research Programs.” The site’s new “look and feel” also incorporates the Lab logo, which makes it “clearer to users whether a webpage is associated with Berkeley Lab,” explains Stu Loken of the Physics Division, who managed the project. The new site was designed and developed by the Creative Services Office.

DOE Funding for Lab's
New Biofuel Consortium
By Ian Hoffman

With heady talk of embarking on a Manhattan Project for biological fuels, Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman unleashed three teams of scientists Tuesday on a national hunt for clean liquid energy derived from plants and microbes. A year ago, Bay Area scientists decided to lead that hunt with an audacious bid to lure two giant biofuels institutes here, funded by tens of millions of dollars a year from BP LLC and the U.S. Department of Energy. On Tuesday, they clinched the second half of that double prize as Bodman named the Joint BioEnergy Institute, led by Berkeley Lab, as one of three national bioenergy centers to receive $125 million each over the next five years. Full story. Go here to watch a webcast of yesterday's announcement, here to read a statement from Gov. Schwarzenegger, and here to view a KGO-TV video clip.
