Toward the goal of harnessing the power of nature through DNA sequencing, the DOE Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI) has announced the latest Community Sequencing Program portfolio: Eucalyptus, Foxtail Millet, Red Algae, and Novel Microbial Communities. These plant and microbial targets—most with implications for helping wean the nation's dependence on fossil fuel-total some 21 billion nucleotides of DNA sequence capacity allocated to public projects for fiscal year 2008. $1.8 Million Gift Will
Advance Health Research
A $1.8 million gift from Gilead Sciences, Inc. will boost Berkeley's research in the health sciences over the next four years. Half the funds will go to Berkeley Lab researchers Jennifer Doudna and Carolyn Bertozzi, who are also with UC Berkeley's Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. The remainder will benefit the Berkeley Health Sciences Initiative (HSI). "This is a direct opportunity to use our basic research to develop effective drugs to fight infectious diseases, in this case the Hepatitis C virus." says Doudna. Bertozzi will use funds from the Gilead gift to further her research into the pathways for sulfate metabolism in tuberculosis (TB). Full story.
Men's Health Week
Raises Awareness
The Health Care Facilitator's office reminds employees that this is "Men's Health Week." The week before Father's Day gives health care providers an opportunity to encourage men to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for diseases. Statistics show that men do not see their doctor for physical exams as often as women, nor are they as likely to receive health screenings to prevent the onset of more serious conditions.

Can Labs Go Green?
Experts Comment
By Bob Grant
Though labs make up a relatively small chunk of the commercial building stock in the United States, their unique needs for high-performance ventilation systems, 24/7 operation, and specialized appliances (e.g., fume hoods, centrifuges, and ultra-cold freezers) make them notorious energy hogs. Energy "is the big enchilada in terms of the environmental impact of labs," says Paul Mathew, staff scientist at Berkelely Lab. Thus laboratories are logical targets for energy conservation. "There was a perception that energy efficiency and safety conflicted," says Dale Sartor, also of Berkeley Lab. But, say Sartor and Mathew, labs don't necessarily need to sacrifice the crucial concerns of safety or reliability for energy efficiency. Full story.
