PEOPLE

Earth Scientists Elected
To Geological Society

Liu
Pruess
Berkeley Lab earth scientists Hui Hai Liu and Karsten Pruess have been elected fellows of the Geological Society of America. Liu was recognized for his “contributions to variable density flow in porous media, factal-based conceptualization of subsurface heterogeneity, flow and transport in unsaturated fractured rock, and scale-dependent matrix diffusion in fractured rock.” Pruess, who received the GSA’s Meinzer Award last year, was honored for his use of advanced numerical simulation and development of computer coding to study fluid flow in natural porous media.

WORLD OF SCIENCE

Physicist Explores Events
Before the Big Bang

New discoveries about another universe whose collapse appears to have given birth to the one we live in today were recently reported in Nature Physics. "My paper introduces a new mathematical model that we can use to derive new details about the properties of a quantum state as it travels through the Big Bounce, which replaces the classical idea of a Big Bang as the beginning of our universe," said Martin Bojowald, assistant professor of physics at Penn State. Making Sense of World’s
Complex Chemical Soup

Miller

The world as we know it is a soup of chemicals. Air has a complex recipe of oxygen, nitrogen, smog, and a dozen other substances. The oceans have their briny broth of salts and minerals and water. Even our own cells are seething cauldrons of ions and proteins and DNA. Berkeley Lab chemical scientist and UC Berkeley professor William Miller has developed a theory to help understand molecular transformations molecule by molecule. Full story.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Follow These Tips
To Improve Receiving

To help get packages delivered in a timely manner, the Lab’s Receiving Department asks employees who may have received a parcel in error to contact Christina Debernardi (x4935) to arrange for a pick-up. Those who want to track the delivery of their package can do so online. The employee ID number of the person the package was addressed to is required, or enter the tracking number assigned by the delivery carrier in the “Quick Item ID Search” field. Click on your package from the list of results to determine its location.
