Stewart Loken, a 64-year-old physicist with Berkeley Lab, took a scientific approach to fighting his cancer — he immediately jumped into an experiment. “Science is about having a theory and making measurements to see if that theory is correct,” he says. Three and a half years ago, Loken received a new treatment being tested at Stanford, a new method of blood stem cell transplantation for treating cancers of the blood cells and bone marrow. Loken had chronic lymphocytic leukemia, the most common form of leukemia in adults. The therapy restored his ability to endure 100-mile bike rides, scuba dive and kayak. Full story.

A team led by biologist J. Craig Venter has converted one species of bacterium into another by replacing all of its DNA, a critical step toward their ultimate goal of designing entire organisms from scratch. In the burgeoning field of synthetic biology, "this is an important development," said Berkeley Lab Physical Biosciences Division Director Jay Keasling. Full story.

Inez Fung, with Berkeley Lab's Earth Sciences Division, has received a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Community Climate System Model. The organization is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. Fung was recognized for providing "the intellectual guidance and energy behind the transformation of the CCSM from a physical climate model into a comprehensive earth system model. These capabilities allow us to explore a whole new range of ciritical interactions and feedbacks between atmospheric composition, ocean and land biosphere and climate." She was also cited for her mentoring of young scientists.

Library Remains Open During Construction
The Library will be under construction in the Building 50B section of the collection area during July. Reference Desk Librarian Michael Golden will have a temporary desk in the Building 50A collection area and will be available to help with research requests. The General Sciences hallway and main lobby entrances will remain open, and there will still be wireless access, public computers, and reading areas for research and news periodicals. Once the remodel is complete, staff will be co-located with the collection materials, and there will be many new features and services.

Computer Protection For Onsite Visitors
The open network environment at Berkeley Lab makes it easy for guests to use their laptops, since no passwords are required. The Lab runs a continuous scan and isolates protocol to maintain network integrity. The most common security problem is missing Microsoft security patches. The Policy for Reporting and Investigating Allegations of Suspected Improper Governmental Activities ("Whistleblower Policy") governs reporting and investigation of allegations of suspected improper governmental activities. The University of California is also committed to protecting employees and applicants for employment from interference with making a protected disclosure or retaliation for having made a protected disclosure, or for having refused an illegal order as defined in the Policy for Protection of Whistleblowers from Retaliation and Guidelines for Reviewing Retaliation Complaints ("Whistleblower Protection Policy"). Both policies represent the University's implementing policies for the California Whistleblower Protection Act (Government Code Section 8547- 8547.12).
