Lab's Alivisatos Wins
DOE Lawrence Award
Associate Lab Director Paul Alivisatos, a chemist and director of the Materials Sciences Division, has been named one of eight new winners of the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award. Alivisatos, who becomes the Lab’s 27th recipient of the Department of Energy’s highest prize in science, shared the award in the materials research category with MIT's Moungi Bawendi, for “chemical synthesis and characterization of functional semiconducting nanocrystals, also known as quantum dots.” Winning the award in life sciences was Arup Chakraborty, a chemical engineer now at MIT who did most of his award-winning research on T cells at Berkeley Lab. Full story.
Orbach Details FY08
DOE Science Request
Under Secretary for Science Ray Orbach yesterday detailed the Department of Energy's $4.4 billion request for FY08 funds to support the work of the Office of Science. His talk, entitled "Transformational Science for Energy, Environment and America's Competitiveness," can be read in powerpoint here. Included in the references are operating funds for the DOE nanoscience centers (including the Molecular Foundry), the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), and seismic safety upgrades at Berkeley Lab. Funding also would continue for demolition of the Bevatron.

China’s Power Capacity
Soars to New Heights
By Richard McGregor
China’s soaring economic growth has been headlined in recent years by a single, attention- grabbing statistic: China each year adds new power generating capacity equal to the United Kingdom’s entire electricity grid. But China surpassed this benchmark last year. The China Electric Power News reported that new power capacity in 2006 had expanded by 102 gigawatts, or about twice the generating assets of California. “It was a shock even for us who track the numbers,” said Jian Lin, with Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy Technologies Division. Mentor Junior Scientists
At AAAS Breakfast
The American Junior Academy of Science (AJAS) and the National Association of Academies of Science is inviting scientists from Berkeley Lab to participate in a mentoring breakfast, held in conjunction with the AAAS Annual Meeting in San Francisco on Friday, Feb. 16, from 8 to 10 a.m. The gathering seeks to honor and inspire young scientists who will be attending the AJAS annual meeting. These students will visit the Lab on Thursday, Feb 15. Those interested in attending the breakfast should call Rollie Otto (X2648) in the Center for Science and Engineering Education.
