Collaborations With Korea
Promised Following Visit

A delegation from the Science and Technology Cooperation Bureau of the Korean Ministry of Science and Technology spent two days at Berkeley Lab and campus last week, listening to descriptions of research programs and touring facilities. The “summary of discussions” between the parties were signed by Director General Mun-Ki Lee of the Korean group and Lab Director Steve Chu, who together pledged the pursuit of future collaborative efforts through initial planning activities next year.

Runaround Times Posted;
591 Runners Participated

Stephen Whitelam (Materials Sciences) and Jamie Bascom (Life Sciences) may have been the first man and woman across the finish line, but there were 499 other runners and walkers who braved the wet conditions to take part in the 30th Runaround on Oct. 19. The official results of the race are now available, so all those who participated can now find out where they placed. Results are listed by age and gender groups and by overall standings. A special thanks to all those who volunteered to make this event a success. Go here to view a list of those who helped out.

Alvarez Fellowship
Applications Invited

Alvarez

Berkeley Lab’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and Computational Research Division are currently accepting applications for the 2008 Luis W. Alvarez Fellowship in Computational Science. The fellowship allows recent graduates with a Ph.D. to acquire further scientific training at a leading scientific computing facility and to develop independent research maturity. Go here for more information.

Help Lab Save Energy
During Holiday Break

The holiday shutdown runs from 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21 to Tuesday, Jan 1. To help save energy, staff should set back thermostats and turn off nonessential lighting and equipment before leaving for the break. A minimum crew will work during the break to continue essential functions, such as safety, mail, and plant operations. Go here for more details.
