In tribute to former Berkeley Lab Deputy Director Graham Fleming’s many contributions to Lab research programs during his tenure, Lab Director Steve Chu is throwing a party, to which all Lab employees are invited. On Monday, Dec. 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the cafeteria, Fleming’s friends and colleagues will get a chance to say goodbye and share memories with him as he embarks on a sabbatical leave. He was Chu’s deputy since 2004; many of his achievements are summarized in this story.
EIR Hearing Tonight
On Computing Building
Berkeley Lab will hold a public hearing today to invite comment on the draft environmental impact report (EIR) for the proposed Computational Research and Theory (CRT) Facility. The hearing will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the North Berkeley Senior Center at 1901 Hearst Ave. Berkeley Lab proposes to construct an approximately 140,000 gross-square-foot computer facility and office structure. The facility would accommodate up to 300 employees and house the National Energy Research Scientific Computing (NERSC) Center. The public comment period for the draft EIR extends to Jan. 4, 2008. Customer Survey Results
Lead to User Changes
The Information Technology (IT) Division would like to thank all staff who participated in this year's survey. Based on the over 540 responses received, IT has implemented some changes. Effective Oct. 1, e-mail is free of charge, including up to three GB of storage. Also, a new Integrated Library System will be available next spring, as the Lab collaborates with the campus and the Univeristy of California Office of the President to make the full suite of UC Berkeley online journals and databases available to all Lab scientists (not just dual appointees). A story in Friday’s edition of Today at Berkeley Lab on a visit by professional dancer Erica Ridgeway listed the incorrect day. Ridgeway, the daughter of Facilities Division Director Jennifer Ridgeway, will be giving a lesson today at noon in the Building 51 lobby.

EH&S Ergonomics Team
Launches New Database
The Lab’s Environment, Health and Safety Ergonomics Team and the IT Applications Group have revamped the ergonomics database to streamline ergo evaluations and improve communications with supervisors and managers. The database has new features, such as links to ergo product catalogs. It will be launched Monday, Dec. 17, and will accept all new evaluation requests. The old database will run in parallel to manage existing evaluations. Supervisors and managers are encouraged to resolve existing evaluations because the old database will become “read only” on Feb. 17. Offer Worker Protection
Employees reporting improper governmental activities are fully protected by law and Laboratory policy against retaliation. Lab and University of California policies ensure that those with concerns can go forward through various avenues with confidence that their concerns will receive appropriate attention without fear of retaliation. Besides the Employee Hotline (800-403-4744), concerns can be reported via the Lab Environment, Health and Safety Division (x5514), the Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action office (x7635), Human Resources Centers, Ombudsman’s Office (x4130), Internal Audit Services (x4472) and collective bargaining officials for represented employees. Those who believe they were treated negatively after filing a complaint can contact the Employee Relations Office (x6747). Employees may also report retaliation to the DOE Employee Concerns Program, Chicago Office, at 800-701-9966.
