Quest — a PBS TV, radio, and online education series produced by local station KQED — features a community blog on its website, in which contributors write about numerous scientific topics. In a recent posting, Berkeley Lab physicist Kyle Dawson attempts to answer the question: How large is the Universe? “As with most questions about science research, this seemingly simple question actually has quite a complicated answer,” prefaced Dawson in the posting. A mercury spill incident at the Molecular Foundry on Aug. 16 points out the need to report spills and get help as soon as possible. The spill resulted in contamination of several floors, a stairway and an elevator, but immediate reporting and appropriate response could have limited the contamination to a single lab. Go here to read about the incident, and to learn what to do in the event of a spill of a hazardous substance.

Take Steps to Prevent Vehicle Break-Ins
A recent vehicle break-in serves as a reminder that Lab employees should not keep valuables in parked vehicles, particularly in plain site. The break-in occurred at parking lot F, which is located on Cyclotron Road below Blackberry Gate. Lab security staff patrol the parking lot twice each hour. Nothing was stolen, and both Berkeley Lab security staff and the UC police department responded to the incident. Additional vehicle security measures include always locking doors and ensuring that car alarms are functional, and placing valuables in the vehicle out of sight or in the trunk. Individual security awareness and vigilance works. Contact Sam Houston (x4855) for more information.
