Physicst Blogger Dawson
Reflects on Universe Size

Dawson
Quest — a PBS TV, radio, and online education series produced by local station KQED — features a community blog on its website, in which contributors write about numerous scientific topics. In a recent posting, Berkeley Lab physicist Kyle Dawson attempts to answer the question: How large is the Universe? “As with most questions about science research, this seemingly simple question actually has quite a complicated answer,” prefaced Dawson in the posting. SPECIAL EVENT

Celebrating Two Years
Of Safe Construction

Two years of almost injury-free construction work at Berkeley Lab will be celebrated at a Facilities Division event tomorrow from 2 to 3 p.m. in Perseverance Hall. On Aug. 16, the Lab completed 24 months of construction work, comprising more than 335,000 work hours, with only one recordable injury. This is a significant achievement that is far better than the national average. The celebration recognizes those who contributed to this achievement, including employees and representatives from many of the Lab’s construction subcontractors. Go here for more information.

IN MEMORIAM

Element Discoverer,
Seaborg Student Dies

Gofman

John Gofman, a physicist with Livermore Lab and co-discoverer of protactinium-232, uranium-232 and protactinium-233, died Aug. 15. He was 88. While a graduate student at UC Berkeley, he met with then professor and future Nobel Laureate Glenn Seaborg, who suggested Gofman examine whether uranium-233 could exist in nature. Gofman and his colleagues went on to produce four one-millionths of a gram of the isotope at Berkeley Lab’s cyclotron and proved that it would fission spontaneously. Full obituary.

SAFETY LESSON LEARNED

Immediate Reporting
Key to Hazard Control

Reference the Emergency Response Guide when encountering a hazard
A mercury spill incident at the Molecular Foundry on Aug. 16 points out the need to report spills and get help as soon as possible. The spill resulted in contamination of several floors, a stairway and an elevator, but immediate reporting and appropriate response could have limited the contamination to a single lab. Go here to read about the incident, and to learn what to do in the event of a spill of a hazardous substance.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Take Steps to Prevent Vehicle Break-Ins

A recent vehicle break-in serves as a reminder that Lab employees should not keep valuables in parked vehicles, particularly in plain site. The break-in occurred at parking lot F, which is located on Cyclotron Road below Blackberry Gate. Lab security staff patrol the parking lot twice each hour. Nothing was stolen, and both Berkeley Lab security staff and the UC police department responded to the incident. Additional vehicle security measures include always locking doors and ensuring that car alarms are functional, and placing valuables in the vehicle out of sight or in the trunk. Individual security awareness and vigilance works. Contact Sam Houston (x4855) for more information.

Discount for Printer,
Fax Machine Cleaning

The vendor who repairs Hewlett Packard printers is offering a $50 cleaning special for laser and multifunction printer and fax machines through Friday, Sept. 28. The Lab’s IT Division will waive its normal handling fee for printer repairs to accommodate these special requests. Go here to learn more and to request service.
