GOVERNMENT NEWS

JGI's David Gilbert, right, with Tauscher's staffers

Congressional Staffers
Get Tour of JGI Facility

On a whirlwind tour of California’s 10th Congressional District (stretching from Dixon in the north to Livermore in the south), 16 members of Representative Ellen Tauscher’s local and Washington, D.C. office staff made a quick stopover at the Joint Genome Institute Production Genomics Facility on Tuesday afternoon. The sixteen-member contingent was provided a introduction by JGI Director Eddy Rubin, followed by an overview of the recently-funded JBEI (DOE Joint BioEnergy Institute) by Sandia investigator Blake Simmons, and finished with a walk-through of the DNA sequencing line.

CORRECTION

Clarification of Quote
In Tuesday Climate Article

In Tuesday’s edition of Today at Berkeley Lab, an article on the effect of nitrogen on the earth’s climate included an incorrect statement. The sentence should have read: "Changes to the nitrogen cycle are larger in magnitude and more profound than the changes to the carbon cycle. But the nitrogen cycle is being neglected." The quote was made by Elizabeth Holland with the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Free Excess Pick-Up
Deadline is Friday

Requests for the free pick-up of excess items by the Lab’s Transportation Department must be made by 3 p.m. tomorrow. Requests made today and tomorrow will be fulfilled next week, due to heavy response to this offer. Go here to access the online request form, or call x6274.

Buildings 50E, 70 Annex
Get Roofs Replaced

Buildings 50E and 70 Annex will have their roofs replaced, with work starting on Monday and continuing for about three weeks. In preparation for this work, a canopy will be erected today over the pedestrian walkway that leads to the cafeteria, between Building 70 and the Wells Fargo ATM kisok. Staff should use caution when traversing this area. For more information, contact David McPherson (x4869) or Richard Doty (812-0073).

Monday Ticket Sale
For Giants-Dodgers

Representatives from the Lab Employee Activities Association will be in the cafeteria on Monday, from noon to 1 p.m., to sell tickets to the Giants vs. Dodgers game on Sept. 7. Tickets (in section 321) are $27 each. Tickets for Discovery Kingdom, Waterworld, Universal Studios and Raging Waters will also be on sale. Those unable to make it to this event can purchase tickets by contacting Arabella Schmidt.

Production of Lab’s Wall
Calendar Discontinued

Because increasing numbers of Lab staff are using electronic calendars, or purchasing their own decorative paper calendars, the printing of the Lab’s annual wall calendar has been discontinued. Cost-savings will be realized by eliminating the creation, storage and distribution of the calendar.
