The Council on Competitiveness announced this week a new initiative that seeks to enhance U.S. competitiveness and energy security. The Energy Security, Innovation and Sustainability Initiative will focus strongly on the private sector and synergistic collaborations with academia and labor on innovation and competitiveness. Over the next 18 months, the Council will conduct a series of high-level, expert dialogues to examine the competitiveness implications of today's energy challenges and opportunities. Among those on the initiative’s Steering Committee, drawn from the executive suite of major U.S. corporations, universities and labor unions, is Berkeley Lab Director Steve Chu. Road Repairs at Foundry
Delayed Until Aug. 13
Due to a delay in the availability of materials, the previously announced paving project on the road behind the Molecular Foundry and Building 62 and 66 will not begin until Monday, Aug. 13. The closure should last about one week. Contact Mike Elizalde (x6021) with questions.

Tom McKone, a risk assessment specialist in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division, was visited on Wednesday by KPIX-TV (Channel 5) health reporter Kim Mulvihill to talk about this week’s news story concerning ultrafine particles emitted by laser printers. While expressing interest in the report and the particles’ potential impact on human health, McKone told viewers, “Don’t throw out your printer. Super Test Results
For Superconducting Magnet
AFRD's Superconducting Magnet Group celebrated successful tests at Brookhaven last week of the LRS01, the longest magnet model of its kind ever built. Developed in partnership with Brookhaven and Fermilab, the superconducting magnet uses niobium-tin "racetrack" windings in an almost four-meter long supporting structure. Paolo Ferracin, who led the Berkeley Lab effort, calls the tests "a major milestone in the development of superconducting magnets for the Large Hadron Collider's Interaction Regions, beyond the current design." He emphasizes "the successful partnership between labs," including Berkeley Lab's "magnet design and analysis, cable fabrication, coil technology transfer, and structure design and fabrication."
