Hearing: Funding Nano
Risk Studies a Must
Government and environmental leaders renewed calls for greater federal scrutiny of the health effects of nanotechnology. Testifying before the House Science Committee yesterday about the environmental and safety effects of nanotechnology, experts said the government needs to invest more in risk research. Among those who testified was Altaf Carim, Program Manager in Basic Energy Sciences at the Department of Energy's Office of Science. Carim cited the DOE's interest in nanoscale science, including Berkeley Lab's Molecular Foundry and four other user facilities. UC, Bechtel to Partner
And Compete for LLNL
The University of California Board of Regents voted yesterday to compete for the management and operation of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The final bid to the Department of Energy, due Oct. 12, will be submitted by a team led by UC and Bechtel National. Regents acted on the recommendation of UC President Robert Dynes. The proposal will include a provision that, if accepted, would install current acting director George Miller as permanent director at Livermore. As required by the DOE Request for Proposals, UC and Bechtel will form a separate corporate entity to act as prime contractor to manage the laboratory. Full story.

Talk Explores Creation
Of Safety Culture
To get a sense of what it takes for a research agency to excel in workplace safety, one need only look to DuPont, winner of the National Safety Council's 2006 Green Cross for Safety Medal. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, DuPont has a workplace safety record 11 times better than the nation's industrial average. In the last five years, DuPont's injury rate is statistically better than the previous year. This year the lost time injury rate (0.126 lost-time injuries per 200,000 exposure hours) is 50 percent lower than it was last year. How? DuPont Executive Vice President Tom Connelly will discuss the development of his company's safety culture at noon in the Building 50 Auditorium on Monday. All Berkeley Lab employees are invited to attend.
Symposium Tomorrow
For Particle Group's 50th
Berkeley Lab's Particle Data Group (PDG), an international collaboration that has reviewed and educated students about particle physics and related areas of astrophysics, will commemorate its 50th anniversary tomorrow. An all-day symposium begins at 9:30 a.m. with former Lab physicist and energy expert Art Rosenfeld speaking in the Building 50 Auditorium. On Historical Tour
The Berkeley Historical Society is hosting six different walking tours this fall, and Berkeley Lab is among the locales. Terry Powell, manager of Berkeley Lab Community Relations, will take visitors into select buildings and research facilities on Friday, Nov. 10.
